Figure of the Earth
"Figure of the Earth" is a collection of mostly book and paper copies with a few pages of Dahlen's own handwritten notes. The date of the collection is unknown, though by the date of the papers it can be inferred that it was sometime after 1966. The papers and notes are contained within a brown loose leaf binder and the papers themselves sometimes contain commentary from Dahlen. The majority of the papers and notes found in this collection are about the shape of the Earth, known as the geoid. Since Newton, it was proposed that the Earth would be slightly bulged at the equator due to the centripetal force from its rotation. However, it was never clear by how much. The papers talk about newfound satellite data and how it can be used to solve the question of the true shape of the Earth. This collection can be found at: Guyot Hall, Princeton, NJ, 08540.
