Topographic relief map of South Africa centered over the 2.9 Ga Witwatersrand Basin and the 2.0 Ga Vredefort Impact Structure. Highlands on the southern margin are in Lesotho and the regional topographic relief is approximately 2000 meters.  Cities (green). Florisbad is a hot spring.  Au mines from where microbial samples have been collected by the project to date are in black.  The geological contacts for the Lower and Upper Rand are marked by the black lines. The "carbon" leader follows closely the contact with the Upper Rand.   Vaal River (blue) is the source of much of the water used in the mines.  The terraced terrain on the northern margin represents the 2.0 Ga Bushveld Complex.  The general slope of the land to the west indicates that groundwater flow in the aquifers overlying the Witwatersrand sequence should be from east to west prior to extensive dewatering associated with mining.
